Markus Zusak, author of the book, "The Book Thief," published a hit book that topped nearly every novel chart in the world including the New York Times, Amazon.com, and other countries top charts (About Markus Zusak). Markus actually started to create and form the concept of the book when his computer decided to break (www.chipublib.org). He stated that he started the creation of the story about a girl in the city of Sydney Australia who stole a book, then later on started piecing one thing with another (www.chipublib.org). Along with his computer being faulty, he said a lot of the ideas that he incorporated in the book also came from his parents when he would listen to their stories about WW2 at home (chipublib.org). His main inspiration for the character Liesel was actually because of his mother who lived on the outskirts of Munich (Chipublib.org). Along with Liesel being thought up, he also created death as the narrator for his book (chipublib.org). He created death to narrate the story because of the connections that death and war had with each other (chipublib.org). The fact that death was narrating his book was almost a nightmare for him, he never really wanted to have death narrate his story, but he kept coming back to death being the narrator, so eventually he broke down and decided that nobody could be a better narrator than death himself (Chipublib.org) Lastly, he stated, "I never think of this book’s audience in terms of age. I honestly thought it wouldn’t have any audience at all, and that’s how it became the book it did. I thought, “No one’s going to read this, I might as well do exactly what I want.” I think that’s how I ended up keeping Death on the books, and every other oddity, from incorrect grammar to the small announcements appearing throughout the text. I stopped worrying about the audience and that has to happen with every book, I think. There’s a moment where you realize you’ve cared for the audience all this way, and you get a bit fed up, and finally say: “All right, I’ve helped you out this far, but now you have to come with me” (Chipublib.org). Overall, he pieced a lot of his book upon his families experiences, but also with his own ideas of a story he created in Sydney, Australia to create a wonderful book that is loved worldwide (chipublib.org).
