The Book Thief consists of 4 main characters, and many minor characters. The major characters in the book include, Liesel, Hanz, Max, and Rudy. Liesel is a young girl in her early teens who has been given to a family in Mulching, Germany to raise her after her mother and brother have been separated from her. She decides to find a love for books after
finding a gravediggers book when burying her brothers lifeless body. Hanz Hubermann is Liesel's new father.
Hanz is a painter who is struggling with joining the nazi party. He is a joyful character who can make poverty
seem like a joyride and plays his beloved accordian for everyone to enjoy. Max Vandenburg was a jewish fighter who was a friend of Hanz. Max's purpose was to outlast the fatal prosecution of the fuhrer. Last off is Rudy, Liesel's first friend and best friend throughout the story. He is a young mischievous boy who loves the famous runner, Jesse Owens. The minor characters or lesser important ones include Rosa Hubermann, Tommy Muller, Ilsa Hermann, and Frau Holtzapfel. Rosa is Liesel's new mother, Tommy is Liesel's other friend, Ilsa is the mayors wife, and Frau is a neighbor of the Hubermanns.
The overall theme of the book is that life has its ups and downs, and that everyone experiences them even if they don't want to face such problems. This is proven very well with a world war two setting, the loss of loved ones, and poverty. The other side includes life achievements, new found hobbies and goals, or even helping others who need help with their own problems. With the narrator of death, this makes the story an easy roller coaster of emotions and feelings for the reader and the characters. Choosing death as the narrator brought a nice twist to the book, giving a darker and more serious tension to the story.
