The book Thief was a very well thought out and planned book. It brought elements to the story that I have never seen before, especially in a novel. The author used a narrator who quite shockingly turned out to be death. Death gives the story a weird, more serious, tone to the novel. Along with an unusual narrator, he spoils certain parts of the story before they even happen. It was a way to almost calm the shock value so that the reader could handle all of the chaos of emotions that was going through the readers head. It was a unique way of approaching it and reminded me of Romeo and Juliet, where the book starts off telling us the ending of the story. Markus Zusak did nearly the same thing, but not so early on. When getting to the end of the book, you are already anticipating it, but it almost makes you want to read the ending more, almost as a way to check if Markus Zusak was lying to us.
Even though the story had a weird way of approaching us and using the unique layout to its advantage, the story itself was spectacular. There was never a part of the book that was boring or slow moving, I was always looking forward to reading what was happening next. The fact that this book is based during ww2 might have something to do with that, but it was a smart choice for a setting and theme. Even though ww2 books have been made a plentiful amount of times, he made his own twist and turn on the novel. I never personally understood how people could find books so emotional or intriguing before I read this book, but in all seriousness, this book could bring tears to the eyes of even Chuck Norris. Its almost like Markus Zusak put onions into the binding of the book. Finally, I feel this book could leave different feelings and emotions on other readers than myself. This book covers many different problems and topics that it may relate to others more than myself. It is a book that was written for one such group of people, anyone of any age group, any ethnicity, any race or region can enjoy. Nearly everyone can relate to the damage and impact of ww2 and to a lot of the problems that the characters face. If you have ever hesitated reading this book because you may think it is boring, repetitive, or even similar to another book, I can promise you it is not. This book is probably my all time favorite now and I hope you take the time to allow it onto your list of favorite novels.
